The Frank K. Berry FIDE Open

December 13–15, 2024

By William Lin

Oklahoma celebrated the return of FIDE events with a tournament in honor of the late Frank K. Berry, who held his last FIDE-rated event in 2016.  Josie Braddy organized the event and served as chief arbiter.

With an average rating of 1972, the open section was extremely competitive and featured several titled players.  IM Zurab Javakhadze,  FM Ryan Amburgy, and NM Logan Shafer tied for first place with 4.0 out of 5  points each, all going undefeated. â€‹Behind them with 3.5/5 were WFM Rachael Li and David Luscomb.

 â€‹

Matthew Huber went undefeated to win the Reserve section with 4.5 points.  Unrated player Christopher Bradford and Jack Xue tied for second with 4.0.

Anthony Tuttle won the Novice with 4.5 points. Similar to the Reserve section, second place was an unrated player. Another unrated player, William Petty, scored 4.0 points to tie for second with New Mexico player Brandon Escobedo.

Unruh takes top Air Force Prize

October 21, 2024 Charles Unruh won the Top Air Force Prize in the 65th Armed Forces Open, held October 12–14 in Annapolis, Maryland. He tied for third overall in the Open section with 4.0 out of 5 points. He also tied for third (6.0 out of 7) in the blitz side event, along with his father, NM Chuck Unruh. Chuck played in the USFAO Veterans Open section in the main event.

The Unruhs weren't the only Oklahomans at the tournament. Paul Covington and Mike Covington played in the Armed Forces and Veterans open sections, respectively.

Before his career in the Air Force took him to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, Charles was a well known tournament director in Oklahoma. He also served OCA and OSCO as a board member, tournament director, and tireless volunteer.  But his greatest legacy (so far) is through the many scholastic players and teams he has coached in both Oklahoma and South Dakota. He currently teaches chess to more than 30 students from a homeschool group in the town of Keystone.

This week, Charles is playing in the 34th North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Chess Championship held in Rhodes, Greece. This is his third time participating in the NATO event.

AMBURGY WINS FIFTH BLITZ TITLE

For the fifth year running, FM Ryan Amburgy is Oklahoma's blitz champion.

The 2024 Oklahoma Blitz Championship was held October 12 in Chandler. Thirty-five players competed in three sections.

Amburgy scored 12 points out of 14 in the seven-round, G/3;+2 event. His only loss was one of his two games against Josh Alexander (9.0/14), who finished in second. David Luscomb  finished third (8.0/14).

Our 2024 Reserve (U1700) champion is Jake Williams (11.0/14). Viraj Singh (10.0) came in second, and Roshan Valentine (9.0) was third.

Theodore Crandall and Andrew Alexander tied for first in a particularly tough Novice (U1000) section—that section was combined for pairings with the U1700. But Crandall and Alexander played up to the occasion, managing to score higher than several Reserve players and ending the day with 8.0 points each. Crandall won the tiebreak round and was named Novice champion for 2024.

The event was directed by Rebecca Rutledge and hosted by Michael Bay at the Chandler Interplanetary Office Suites. Our thanks to Mr. Bay for providing this "out of this world" venue, and for giving us the opportunity to spend the day in in the charming Route 66 city of Chandler.
