Middle School Nationals
Angelique Chen, Cooper Nuckolls, and Kiara Pavithran represented Oklahoma at the national Middle School Championships, held in Atlanta in May. Nuckolls turned in an outstanding performance, tying for third in his division and gaining 160 rating points.
Some highlights from summer '24
Kansas Open & Championship
In the Open, William Lin finished just a half point off the overall winner. His 4.0 score landed him in a second-place tie and earned him the Open section’s Top Scholastic award and a 55-point rating jump.
Top scholastic player in the Reserve was Liam Applegate, who scored 3.5. A half point behind him was Ryan Samadder, whose decision to play up paid off with an astonishing 111-point rating jump.
US Open National Invitationals
Elizabeth Braddy, Oscar Wang, Lafayette Chen, and Aayush Praveen represented Oklahoma at the national Tournaments of State Champions event, which was held during the US Open in Norfolk, Virginia.
Chen tied for first in the U2100 at the Weeramantry Blitz, held in conjunction with the national scholastic invitationals. And Braddy was presented with a special recognition for being a five-time competitor at this prestigious event.
Jerry Spann Memorial Oklahoma Open & Championship
Lafayette Chen and Kelvin Xie both scored 3.5 in a very strong Open section at this year's state championship. In the same section, William Lin and Joe Zacharias scored 3.0.
In the Reserve, Liam Applegate turned in a stunning performance. He'd been the 24th seed out of 31 players, but he finished at the top—first place with a perfect 5 out of 5 (and an astonishing 275-point jump in rating)!
Maxwell Xie tied for second place in the same section. Also scoring well in the Reserve with 3.0 points each were Aayush Praveen, Roshan Valentine, Kirthika Duggisetty, Kiara Pavithran, and Zion Wright.
Surprisingly, the Amateur section had more adults than youths. Aryan Karn and Paarth Jain tied for third with 4.0 points each. Tristan Zhai and Dexter Gray both scored 3.5, with Aaron Lu, Charley Qiu, and Lorenzo Folsom just behind them with 3.0 points each.
Other tournaments
Anurag Roy Choudhury took third place and enjoyed a 46-point ratings jump at the Dallas Summer Open.
Maxwell Barnes tied for third in the U2100 at the National Open in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was also among the Oklahoma scholastic players who participated in the inaugural Universal Open, a tournament that featured a special match section for NFL players and other sports celebrities. Ryan Samadder and William Lin also played in the event. Oklahoma kids also played in the Western Class Championships and the World Open.
